Is Root Canal Treatment Actually Painful
Is root canal treatment actually painful, or is that just an old fear?
The pain people associate with root canal treatment mostly comes from the infection itself; not the procedure.
By the time a dentist begins the treatment, local anaesthesia has already numbed the area completely. Most patients feel pressure or mild vibration at most, and nothing sharp. What has changed dramatically in recent years is the technology: rotary endodontic systems (motorised, flexible instruments) clean the canals far more precisely and quickly than older manual files, reducing the time you spend in the chair and the trauma to surrounding tissue.
Post-treatment soreness for a day or two is normal and manageable with a basic painkiller. The discomfort of leaving an infected tooth untreated — spreading infection, abscess, eventual bone loss — is significantly worse than the procedure itself.
