Whats The Difference Between A Zirconia Crown And A Pfm Crown Which One Should I Choose
What’s the difference between a zirconia crown and a PFM crown? Which one should I choose?
A PFM (Porcelain Fused to Metal) crown has a metal base for strength with a layer of porcelain over it to match tooth colour.
It is durable and has been used reliably for decades. The two limitations are a dark line that can sometimes appear at the gumline as gums recede over time, and the fact that the porcelain layer can chip under heavy biting forces.
A full zirconia crown is made entirely from zirconium oxide — a ceramic material that is harder than PFM, completely metal-free, and transmits light in a way that is closer to natural tooth enamel. This makes it especially suited for front teeth where appearance is critical, or for patients with metal sensitivities. Biocompatible zirconia also causes less gum irritation over time.
The cost is higher than PFM, but for most people placing a crown on a root canal treated tooth — which they want to last decades — the investment difference is modest relative to the lifespan of the restoration. Your dentist’s recommendation will factor in which tooth is being crowned, your bite force, and how visible the tooth is when you smile.
