Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold: causes and what helps

That quick, sharp twinge when something cold, hot or sweet touches a tooth is called dentin sensitivity. It happens when the hard enamel that normally shields a tooth thins out, or the gum recedes, exposing the softer layer underneath. That layer is full of microscopic channels that lead to the nerve, so temperature and sweetness travel straight to it.

Common reasons teeth become sensitive

A few everyday things wear enamel or expose roots over time:

  • Brushing too hard, or with a stiff brush, which slowly abrades enamel and pushes gums back.
  • Acidic food and drink — citrus, aerated drinks, pickles — softening the enamel surface.
  • Grinding or clenching, often at night, which stresses and thins the biting surfaces.
  • Gum recession, which uncovers the root, where there is no enamel at all.
  • A cracked tooth or a worn filling, which can let sensation reach the nerve.

What tends to help at home

For mild, occasional sensitivity, small changes often make a real difference over a few weeks:

  • Switch to a soft-bristled brush and lighten your pressure — let the bristles do the work, not your arm.
  • Use a desensitising toothpaste consistently; these work gradually by calming the exposed channels, so give them a couple of weeks.
  • Wait about 30 minutes after acidic food or drink before brushing, so you are not scrubbing softened enamel.
  • Try not to hold cold drinks against the sensitive tooth.

When sensitivity is a signal, not a nuisance

Sensitivity that is sharp and lingers, or is tied to one particular tooth, can point to something more than worn enamel — a cavity, a cracked tooth, or a problem near the nerve. Pain that wakes you at night, or comes with swelling, is worth attention sooner rather than later.

When to see a dentist

Persistent sensitivity is easy to check and usually straightforward to ease. None of this replaces an in-person check-up — every mouth is different, and a quick look often settles what guesswork cannot. If something has been bothering you for more than a few days, it is worth getting it seen early, while it is still simple to treat.

At Kosmoss Dental in Indirapuram, we are happy to talk through what you are noticing and explain the options before anything is decided. Give us a call or drop by the clinic to book a time that suits you.
